ESA is pleased to announce that Jorgen Blomberg has been selected to lead the firm’s Environmental Hydrology and Design (EH&D) practice. In his new role, Blomberg will provide strategic leadership for more than 80 practitioners who specialize in environmental engineering, landscape architecture, and restoration planning and design to drive innovative and sustainable project solutions for a diverse portfolio of clients.
For over four decades, ESA’s EH&D practice has been a leader in wetland and river restoration design and pioneered nature-based solutions for coastal shoreline resilience and multi-benefit flood management. Blomberg will be responsible for guiding and growing the practice, which extends from coast to coast, including a growing portfolio of work across the Southwest region.
Blomberg holds a Master in Landscape Architecture with a focus on watershed restoration from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. In over 24 years with ESA’s EH&D practice, he has excelled as a restoration designer, team leader, and project director. He has engaged in a wide array of projects, including signature large-scale initiatives such as the Napa River Restoration and Klamath River Renewal projects, spanning from the Pacific Northwest to Southern California.
“After completing a robust search and evaluation process, our review team was unanimous in selecting Jorgen for this position,” said ESA Senior Vice President and Director of Practices Jim O’Toole. “Jorgen’s project portfolio and his work with team members across our offices reflect a deep appreciation for our subject matter experts and the potential of the practice to innovate and grow. His leadership will be critical as we continue to advance our strategic goals and strengthen ESA’s foothold in all the markets we serve.”
Throughout his career, Blomberg has demonstrated a commitment to integrating geomorphology, design engineering, biotechnical applications, and habitat restoration into his projects. His expertise extends to stakeholder outreach and regulatory compliance, supporting project solutions that are not only environmentally sustainable but also community supported. Blomberg’s recent leadership on the Alder Creek and Leatherwood Creek Restoration and Public Access Infrastructure Project, the largest creek restoration in the East Bay Regional Park District’s history, daylighted and restored over 4,000 feet of creek channels previously routed through culverts and restored four acres of riparian and upland habitats. The transformation supports native rainbow trout and other protected species while providing new public trails and access points for the Oakland community and the broader Bay Area.
“It’s a privilege to recognize Jorgen’s long-standing commitment to both his practice and all those that he has mentored and coached at ESA over the years with this well-deserved promotion,” said President and CEO Leslie Moulton-Post. “His leadership will guide our talented team across the nation to drive sustainable innovations that address the complex challenges facing our coastal, estuarine, and riverine environments and support thriving public spaces.”
