To maintain the delicate balance between operational needs and community noise impacts, the world’s busiest passenger airport—Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport—sought to prepare a FAR Part 150 Study update.
Why does this project matter?
The airport has one of the oldest and most comprehensive noise abatement/mitigation programs in the U.S. that required an update to keep the airport on track with future operational land use compatibility studies and development decisions.
What is ESA doing to help?
As the Airport’s noise and air quality consultant, ESA used Noise and Operations Monitoring System (NOMS) data to develop noise exposure maps and evaluate the effects of alternative air traffic control procedures as part of the land use compatibility planning effort. To gather input from surrounding community stakeholders, ESA coordinated with advisory and citizens’ committees, as well as 15 political jurisdictions.
Our experts developed a history of the airport’s air quality emissions, established an air quality database of current and future emissions associated with equipment and operations, assessed air quality impacts associated with the master plan, and conducted extensive construction emission-reduction evaluations. ESA’s skilled facilitation helped the airport manage complex air quality non-attainment issues.
