A key member of the ESA Cultural Resources team since joining in 2012, Chris Lockwood, PhD, RPA, has been promoted to the role of Business Group Director for the Northwest Region. In this new role, Chris will provide leadership and strategic thinking to manage and grow the specialized services the team is known for, including archaeology, curation and museum collections management, and historic preservation.

“Over the years, Chris has played a major role in some of our most interesting and challenging projects, including the Alaska Way Viaduct, Sound Transit Link Light Rail, East Lake Sammamish Trail, Lake Hills Trunk, and many others,” Margaret Clancy, ESA’s Northwest Regional Director, states. “Chris has shown his skill as a geoarchaeologist, a project manager, and trusted client adviser. Clients and colleagues value his ability to strategize, solve problems, and work across disciplines to get things done.”

With more than 21 years of experience in archaeology and cultural resources in a broad range of environments, including coastal, fluvial, lacustrine, and urban settings, Chris will bring his breadth of experience―and enthusiasm―to this position.

“Our clients work very hard to deliver essential services―utilities, transportation, housing, recreation― especially in these unprecedented times,” says Chris. “ESA’s team is all in to support these efforts, and leading these important projects makes me excited to come to work every day.”

As a geoarchaeologist, Chris has the advantage of dual training in earth sciences and anthropology to inform him in assessing project risks for cultural resources and evaluating project alternatives. His specific experience also includes managing complex cultural resources projects, designing fieldwork methodologies, formulating unanticipated discovery plans and archaeological resources monitoring and treatment plans, and assisting clients with cultural resources avoidance and mitigation.
