From collecting and editing real-time data using mobile devices to capturing high resolution video using drones, our team works alongside scientists, planners and engineers to implement the latest technologies to collect, process and visualize data to help our teams, clients, and stakeholders make sense of real world problems. We work closely with our clients to deploy custom tools based on their unique requirements and needs. Our web services and visualization tools are being used by local, state and federal organizations across the United States and abroad. Our latest geospatial work includes:

Real-Time Change Mapping – California High Speed Rail Project

ESA is supporting the primary construction joint venture (Tudor-Perini, Zachery, Parsons) and California High Speed Rail Authority in the construction on the very first segment—Fresno to Merced—being built for California's new high speed train. When complete, the high speed rail will provide travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco. ESA is providing a range of services including updating CEQA/NEPA documents, amending environmental permits and biological and cultural resource surveys and performing compliance monitoring. Our GIS team is involved in every step of the process, including helping to develop figures and field maps, providing geospatial analysis for impact calculations and creating a real time habit change mapping application using mobile tablets equipped with ESRI ArcGIS Collector.

Habitat Evolution Modeling – Los Peñasquitos Lagoon Restoration

ESA supported the City of San Diego by completing a channel conditions and sediment source assessment for watersheds draining into the Los Peñasquitos Lagoon. ESA conducted field investigations and created a HEC-RAS hydraulic and sediment transport model of the two tributaries to quantify the sediment contribution made by each tributary and assessed the impact on flooding. We developed restoration concepts and prepared an updated Lagoon Enhancement Plan to help remediate vector habitat in the Lagoon. Using geospatial and modeling tools, ESA constructed a habitat evolution model that projects habitat acreage and distribution into the future, while considering sea-level rise, accretion, and freshwater inflow. We are currently evaluating habitat function, hydrology, public access options, and maintenance and sustainability in order to rank the restoration concepts for stakeholders and the public.

Interactive Watershed Planning –  Ecology Puget Sound Watershed Characterization

ESA worked with the Washington State Department of Ecology and key stakeholders to develop an interactive website and user guide displaying the results of the Watershed Characterization Project. We worked closely with Ecology staff to publish the results of the watershed characterization model to an interactive map and set of tools. The project included convening a user group to identify challenges and opportunities to local governments for using data and products and to test the application. The website also includes a collection of interactive story maps showing applications for land use planning and decision-making. A beta version of the website is available online at:

The intuitive and interactive framework for the website is intended to provide resources and decision support tools for planners, scientists, and the public using Ecology's watershed characterization data.
