Environmental Science Associates (ESA), a leading environmental consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Michael Newland has joined the firm as the Northern California Cultural Resources Director. He will be based in ESA’s Petaluma office, leading the region’s Cultural Resources team of expert prehistoric and historical archaeologists, architectural historians, and historians to increase the breadth and depth of ESA’s Cultural Resources practice.
“Mike’s 20 years of experience in both prehistory and historical archaeology, and his more recent work on the interrelationship of archaeology and climate change, will add dimension to our robust capabilities,” says Brian Boxer, ESA’s Northern California Regional Director. “His leadership will accentuate ESA’s delivery of outstanding cultural resources expertise for our clients on projects throughout California and the Great Basin.”
Mike has been continually involved in research initiatives focused on a variety of topics, including Bay Area prehistory, large-scale historic-era mining sites, and California desert prehistory. The wealth of knowledge and expertise he gained has afforded him the opportunity to be the lead author in a chapter on climate change and California archaeology in the pending book “Public Archaeology and Climate Change,” published by Oxford Press and due out later this year.
Mike regularly works closely in the field with several local federally recognized tribes on collaborative projects. He is a frequent public speaker and has given presentations before the California State Parks Commission, as well as to local tribal, non-profit, vocational, and government groups. In addition, his activism includes being a stakeholder for the California Department of Parks and Recreation Transformation Team, a member of the Society for American Archaeology’s Climate Change Task Force, and a past-president for the Society for California Archaeology.
