Washington State Department of Transportation Curation Policy Development

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is delivering the largest capital construction program in its history – more than $16.3 billion in projects, including 421 highway projects. The agency needed a policy to guide where various collections would be curated to house archaeological collections from WSDOT construction sites across the state.

ESA collaborated with WSDOT to draft a statewide curation policy and report outlining WSDOT’s existing curation challenges, relevant laws and regulations surrounding archaeological collections, and comparative information for other state transportation department procedures and policies. Our experts facilitated stakeholder meetings and incorporated this feedback into the final WSDOT policy. The final policy is now part of WSDOT’s cultural guidelines manual.

WSDOT sought ESA’s expertise in preparing a curation policy based on our reputation as a leader in archaeological curation.
