Tuolumne Rancheria: Species-Sensitive Development

California's largest-ever transfer of land to a Native American tribe required innovative solutions to balance Central Valley species conservation and development.

ESA prepared an environmental assessment for a 297-acre fee-to-trust application by the Tuolumne band of Me-Wuk Indians. Our team assessed the potential effects (including biological, noise, and air quality) of new residential development, roadways, infrastructure, and tribal government facilities within oak woodland habitat. The site provides potential habitat for listed species such as the California Red-Legged Frog and Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle. Performing a wetland delineation, Phase I hazardous materials survey, various endangered species services, vegetation mapping, GIS database management and project design, ESA assisted the tribe in balancing conservation and development, including several habitat restoration projects, monitoring and conservation planning for the Rancheria.

ESA helped to balance environmental responsibilities with economic growth for one of California's largest transfers of land to a Native American tribe.
