To help meet statewide mandates to reduce landfill waste by 50 percent, the County of Los Angeles began investigating the local waste stream to identify areas for reduction.

ESA steered Los Angeles County's Smart Gardening yardwaste program, one of the largest in the U.S., to divert yardwaste from landfill. The program now serves more than 10 million people in 100 cities. ESA conducted over 500 workshops at numerous sites throughout the county to teach participants about backyard composting, worm composting, grasscycling and water-wise gardening. The program's use of direct marketing led to a sharp increase in attendance at these workshops. ESA's work included the redesign of the project website (link to www.smartgardening.com), improving public access and making it more user-friendly.

ESA successfully led the implementation of a yardwaste program for one of nation's most populated areas, a key contributor to meeting state mandated landfill waste reduction goals.
