Robert Battalio, PE Named Chief Engineer and Vice President
Environmental Science Associates (ESA), a leading environmental consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Robert (Bob) Battalio, PE, has been appointed Chief Engineer and named an ESA vice president. As Chief Engineer, he will oversee the firm’s engineering services in flood management, restoration design, and coastal engineering. As a Vice President, Bob joins senior leadership in setting the firm’s direction and committing the firm’s resources to meet client needs.
“Bob has been integral to overseeing the high quality restoration design and engineering solutions within our environmental hydrology practice, formerly Phil Williams & Associates,” says Eric Ruby, Chief Operating Officer, “A licensed engineer in four states and 25+ years of experience under his belt, we know that Bob will lead ESA to meet today’s restoration and coastal engineering challenges.”
Bob has dedicated his career to coastal and estuarine engineering, wetland and creek restoration design, and waterfront civil engineering projects throughout the U.S. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in California, Washington, Oregon, and Louisiana. He was integral to pioneering projects such as the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s 1990 San Francisco Bay sea level rise study; effects of coastal sand mining in southern Monterey Bay; FEMA’s 2005 Pacific Coast Flood Hazard Mapping Guidelines; and coastal erosion response to sea level rise for Pacific Institute and the California Ocean Protection Council (2009). Some of Bob’s favorite projects are close to home, including assisting the National Park Service with tidal inlet and shore processes at Crissy Field; working on sand transport and master planning for Ocean Beach; designing a groundbreaking managed shore retreat project at Pacifica State Beach; and leading engineering design for the restoration of thousands of acres of tidal wetlands throughout the San Francisco Bay.
Bob holds a Masters in Engineering from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, and is the current Northern California Vice President of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association. An avid lover of the coast and its waves, Bob is also a member of the Surfrider Foundation.
